The Eagle as a Symbol for America

Independence Day is that day every year when we celebrate American freedom by gathering around grills, backyards and pools. Then we top off the day by watching fireworks light up the night sky. We ooh and ahh as they burst gloriously beneath the moonlight.

The Symbol of the American Bald Eagle

The bald eagle has been recognized as a symbol of the United States since 1782, back when the Revolutionary War was still being waged. After much debate, the eagle was selected for prominent display on the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle, specifically, was chosen because it is the only eagle native solely to North America.

Its image creates a uniting thread that carries through the centuries and from coast to coast as a symbol of courage, strength and freedom. Its history, like American history, is one of perseverance and resilience.

Between the late 1800s and the 1960s, the bald eagle faced a severe population decline, dropping from more than 100,000 breeding pairs to just 400 in the continental US. Yet thanks to decades of federal protections, the bald eagle returned and thrived. It was removed from the federal Endangered Species List in 2007.

Now it can be seen all over the country in all its glory.
